Congratulations  MLK Bands and Orchestra! (spring 2010)

The 71st annual Middle Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association’s Concert (MTSBOA) Performance Assessment was held March 3 – 12.  During the festival, 127 bands and orchestras from middle Tennessee, 32 of which are from Metro Nashville Public Schools, competed and were scored by judges in concert performance and sight-reading.   By the end of the festival, nearly half (21) of the 45 superior ratings, the highest possible rating, doled out for concert performance were given to MNPS bands/orchestras. Twenty-seven MNPS groups received superior ratings in sight-reading. Sight-reading requires each group to perform a piece of music for a judge that they have never seen before. Sight-reading indicates how well a group understands performance components such as the ability to read notes and rhythms at first sight. Many other groups received excellent ratings in concert performance and/or sight-reading.  Superior Ratings in concert performance and in sight-reading:Martin Luther King Magnet 8th Grade BandMartin Luther King Magnet 9th Grade BandMartin Luther King Magnet Wind EnsembleMartin Luther King Magnet String Ensemble Grade IV MusicGrade IV music is the most difficult level of music and is usually only played by high school groups. At the festival, four middle school groups from our area took the challenge and entered Grade IV music. A small group of 11 high school bands chose to play at the Grade IV level. Six of those, including five from MNPS, received superior ratings in concert performance and sight-reading:

Congratulations to the Martin Luther King Wind Ensemble for receiving superior ratings and to all of the directors and students for their hard work and commitment to excellence!
